Seven Mayo AC athletes won a total of 20 medals at the AAI National Masters Indoors Championships at Nenagh. As usual it was colder track-side than outside at this venue. Club chairman Padraic Cullina set the standard on Saturday in the combined events quadrathlon. He amassed a fine total of 1,419 points competing in the 60 metres, long jump, shot, and 1,000 metres to win gold. On Sunday, when the indoors championship events took place, he won gold in the long jump and silver in the high jump in over 50 category. Patrick Moran (over 55) won four medals — gold in the high jump, silver in both the long jump and 400 metres, and bronze in 1,500 metres. PJ Hall (over 50) was one of four Mayo AC athletes competing indoors for the first time. He won silver in 200 metres and bronze 60 metres. Breege Blehein-McHale (over 40) won gold and silver medals. Ann Murray (over 45) won three silver medals in the 800m, 1,500m, and 3,000m, and Anthony Devaney (over 35) won silver in the 3,000m and bronze in the 800m. Tom Hunt (over 60) was second in the 400m and 3,000m and third in 800m and 1,500m. This was a great start to the championship year for Mayo AC and they will be looking to add to this medal haul at the intermediate and masters cross country at Forest Park in Boyle on February 21.

•FAI chief executive John Delaney will turn the first sod on the new Oughterard Association Football Club sports facilities on Thursday week. The new sports pitches and facilities are located at New Village, Oughterard. Phase one - the construction of the first natural grass pitch and ground works for the 10 acre site - has commenced and will cost €650,000. In order to raise the estimated total costs of €1.5 million for the full site development, OAFC is hosting a pitchmaker draw on St Patrick’s Day 2009. Prizes include a sporty Mazda 2 car, boat and trailer, €2,000 Marks & Spencer voucher, €1,000 holiday voucher, and laptop. Ernie Caffrey (Ballina AC) won three medals at the masters indoors track and field championships at Nenagh on Sunday. Competing in the V8 (o70) category he won gold in the 60 metres and shot putt, and silver in the 200 metres. Also at Nenagh, Patrick Moran (Border Ramblers AC) won gold in the V4 (o50) combined events pentathlon on Saturday and on Sunday in the masters indoors he won gold in both the 60 and 200 metres, and silver in the long jump.

Ciara Everard was honoured by the Athletic Association of Ireland (AAI) at the annual Juvenile Awards night held in The Arklow Bay Hotel on Friday last.

Athletics Ireland enjoyed great success in The Celtic Cup competition held this year in Carmarthen, Wales. Overall victory was achieved by Athletics Ireland as a result of the girls’ teams taking first place in both under-16 and under-18 cups and the boys under-16 in third place and the under-18 boys in second. Mary Kate Lanigan, KCH, made a substantial contribution to the victory with first place in the under-18 high jump (1.70) and also on the final leg of the victorious 4x300m relay team.

A beautiful sunny day in Tullamore on Saturday was made all the more memorable by the quality performances by the Kilkenny athletes. Various commentators suggest this was one of the most competitive schools finals for many years.

Three Kilkenny athletes were part of the successful Ireland team which finished second in Banka Bystrica, Slovakia, at the weekend. Eileen O’Keeffe had a season’s best of 68.25m to take second place in the hammer. Aoife Hickey finished seventh in the shot with a put of 11.86m and Joanne Cuddihy ran the second leg of the third placed 4X400m relay team.
